THE MAUSOLEUM ROAD AFFAIR’s Sexy Soundtrack
By Author Patricia Miller

Music rocks our world! I love listening to all kinds of tunes and dancing. Whether I’m dressed in an old plaid bathrobe or a new flirty cocktail dress, I like to shake it, baby!

I grew up in the red brick bungalow my dad built on the acre of land beside my grandparents’ farm house. For fun, I go-carted, dirt-biked, snowmobiled, ran through corn fields, and played tennis against the barn door. Country music played on the AM/FM radio in our busy kitchen where sweet apple pies baked, hearty beef stews bubbled, and friends gathered for coffee breaks between chores: songs by Kenny Rogers, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, George Jones, Anne Murray, John Denver, and Dolly Parton. From the lyrics, I learned that love was awesome, but sometimes it could hurt really, really bad.

In our basement, lined with velvety couches and lit by psychedelic fiber optic and lava lamps, rock-and-roll spun on the turntable. Songs by David Bowie, Led Zeppelin, Elton John, ABBA, The Cars, The Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, The Beatles, Supertramp, BTO, and The Who blared. We ate candy sticks dipped in pink and purple powder, and gobbled assorted sub sandwiches. I learned music could change the world, being cool could either be hip or kill you, and eating too much junk food meant an increase in jean size.

Big band, rhythm-and-blues, and instrumental music by Lawrence Welk, Glenn Miller Orchestra, and Fats Domino played on the stereo in our cozy living room, the spot where logs glowed in the stone fireplace, my mother and I played piano, and I sobbed when the television news reporter announced that John Lennon was shot in NYC. I learned that music can inspire, ignite, soothe, coax, and comfort your soul.

Writing THE MAUSOLEUM ROAD AFFAIR was akin to a film streaming in my mind. The book pitched as NIGHT IN RODIANTHE meets UNFAITHFUL and likened to a sexier THE BRIDGES OF MADISON COUNTY. Songs popped into scenes. Music bloomed quietly in the background like wild daisies, or rushed to the foreground with the boom of a drum.
I belt out these tunes when I reflect on the book as I vacuum a messy home filled with kids and critters. ***vacuum drowns out screeching cat-like sound*** I learned I’m a writer, not a singer.

I hope you enjoy the songs I heard as I wrote down frisky Brianne and Robert’s erotic love story:
