Meet Author Suzanne Van Rooyen

Thank you so much Apryl for hosting this festival! Today I'm going to be talking about my YA science fiction novel I Heart Robot, which just released from Month9Books. I Heart Robot stars Tyri and Quinn who are both passionate about the violin... and each other.

Since today is my IRL birthday and since my androids in I Heart Robot don't get to celebrate their birthdays, I thought it would be the perfect time to throw Quinn a party. He's never had one and he's inviting you all to join him!

Since this is a human-android bash, there'll be all the usual human amenities like a snack table complete with punch, which Tyri's BFF Asrid may or may not have snuck a little something extra into. You've been warned. And of course there'll be cake! Like the traditional Skandian princess cake and the nation's beloved kladkakka.

Since this is Quinn's first birthday party, there'll be some traditional Scandinavian party activities arranged by Tyri's ex. Rurik's in charge of everyone's favourite – fiskdamm. This is a classic kids game where you can go fishing for gifts like bags of candy. If you're unlucky you might catch a sock or roll of toilet paper instead!

And for the androids among us, there'll be Hydrogen on tap to see to all your fueling needs. Quinn's BFF, Kit, has also outdone himself with the party patches! There'll be a selection of patches for you to upload from standard inebriation protocols to more wacky, psychedelic codes to get you in the dancing mood.

Given how important music is to both Tyri and Quinn, of course there'll be an impressive sound system! Despite Quinn's request for Berlioz and Mahler, Sara will be at the decks spinning dance tunes with a few of Quinn's and Tyri's favourites thrown into the mix. Asrid has made sure there'll be a dance floor so be sure to wear comfy shoes too!

I hope you'll enjoy the party, celebrating with Quinn, Tyri, Asrid, Sara, Kit, Rurik and others from I Heart Robot! If the party isn't enough and you'd like to hang out with the gang some more, check out the links below...

Blurb:

Sixteen-year-old Tyri wants to be a musician and wants to be with someone who won't belittle her musical aspirations.

Q-I-99 aka 'Quinn' lives in a scrap metal sanctuary with other rogue droids. While some use violence to make their voices heard, demanding equal rights for AI enhanced robots, Quinn just wants a moment on stage with his violin to show the humans that androids like him have more to offer than their processing power.

Tyri and Quinn's worlds collide when they're accepted by the Baldur Junior Philharmonic Orchestra. As the rift between robots and humans deepens, Tyri and Quinn's love of music brings them closer together, making Tyri question where her loyalties lie and Quinn question his place in the world. With the city on the brink of civil war, Tyri and Quinn make a shocking discovery that turns their world inside out. Will their passion for music be enough to hold them together while everything else crumbles down around them, or will the truth of who they are tear them apart?

Praise for I Heart Robot:

"The tension between the groups, the obvious attraction between the main characters, the ticking time bomb of Quinn’s real identity and the secrets surrounding Tyri’s birth makes for compelling reading. The world building was exceptional and the characters well developed."~ The Australia Times Books

About the Author:

Suzanne is a tattooed storyteller from South Africa. She currently lives in Sweden and is busy making friends with the ghosts of her Viking ancestors. Although she has a Master’s degree in music, Suzanne prefers conjuring strange worlds and creating quirky characters. When she grows up, she wants to be an elf – until then, she spends her time (when not writing) wall climbing, buying far too many books, and entertaining her shiba inu, Lego.
