The Gifted World of Heroes of Arcania

Hi everyone! Thanks so much to Apryl for hosting me during her awesome blogfest!

I’m here today to talk about my recently released YA superhero trilogy, Heroes of Arcania. If you’re into comic books or superhero movies/TV shows, this one might be right up your alley. Told from the POVs of Nova Benson and Cole Warner, they narrate their adventures as teen superheroes while trying to save their city of Arcania from impending demise thanks to a criminal mastermind.

I actually have another series, The Donovan Circus Series, that is sort of HoA’s big sister. It’s based on the same gifted world, but with different everything else. The gifts are what some might call superpowers, and are similar to that of the X-Men. Each gift is different, however, which changes things up a bit. So today I wanted to showcase a few of the cool gifts that you’ll find in this world, particular with HoA.

Nova Benson, our main hero, is what’s called an Unbreakable. Sounds pretty obvious what that entails, right? This means her skin and bones can’t be broken. So no cuts, bruises, scrapes or scars. At least, not in the typical way – Unbreakables can still be hurt or killed in other ways such as disease, asphyxiation, or heck, just fighting another Unbreakable in a way that the strengths are matched. So Nova has all this awesome strength. The problem is, sometimes being a superhero isn’t only about your strength or karate skills. Sometimes it’s about using your head and your heart, which can be tricky if you’re bent on vengeance.

Cole Warner is a Timekeeper, which in the gifted world, is pretty rare. He can freeze time, which includes the people and stuff around him. Some Timekeepers can even step back and forth through time! The important thing to know about any gift is that they’re connected to the owner’s emotions and energy; Cole, for example, can use his gift but only with so many people around and for a limited time. It uses up a lot of energy, so he practices constantly in order to hold it for a longer time. He can freeze a room but not a whole building; humans are easier to freeze, whereas gifted can break through a hold, especially when they see it coming. Get it?

Fortune is the big villain and I won’t go too much into his thing since it’s a big part of the books, but he’s got the gift of electricity. He can wield it as his weapon within seconds, creating it from nothing. (As opposed to a Volter who could only take it from nearby sources such as lights or outlets.) And boy howdy, is he powerful. You’ll learn it in the very first chapter, when he brutally murders Nova’s little sister, thus sending them all on the path to become the HoA.
