WHAT DO THE SIMPLE FOLK DO?

By Glynnis Campbell

Once upon a time, there lived a beautiful princess with long blonde hair and big blue eyes, who was locked in a tower, waiting for a tall, dark, and handsome prince to come to her rescue, blah-blah-blah...yawn...

As much as I adore historical romances of long ago and far away, I sometimes have to roll my eyes when I read about Prince Perfect and Lady Lilywhite.

What about the heroes who weren’t born in a castle with a silver spoon in their mouth?  The everyday people who had to work for a living?  The ones who clawed their way through life by the seat of their trews to find love, relying on wit and wisdom, courage and compassion, a healthy disrespect for authority and a relentless sense of humor?  You know—people like you and me!

I think their stories are far more intriguing.

Who doesn’t love an underdog hero who prevails against all odds by proving that nobility resides, not in the bloodlines, but in the heart?  Who doesn’t adore a scrappy heroine who isn’t afraid to get dirty, who can wield more power in the coy wink of her eye than a queen with an army at her beck and call?

These are the gritty, real, honest people I like to write about.

There’s nothing more fun than discovering a diamond in the rough.  So when I started looking for inspiration for my 16th century Scottish novella—"The Outcast" in THE WINTER STONE—I scoured real historical records, looking for simple heroes.

And you know what?  I found these remarkable commoners…

A lowly outlaw who led his clan against an invading army.

A medieval widow who wrote poetry to support her three children.

A humble fruit-seller who defied the minister in her church.

An impoverished monk who published a revolutionary book on mathematics.

A young bride who followed her husband into battle.

These heroes found their way into the history books.  But I’m sure—then as now—there were even more unsung heroes who performed extraordinary feats, who didn’t let their lack of status or money or power keep them from acting heroically.

You probably know people like this...

A librarian who helps struggling students with homework.

A retired lady who fosters pets.

A businessman who reads to his blind neighbor.

A musician who plays every Sunday at an eldercare facility.

A utility worker who takes the time to relocate a bird's nest.

Real heroes aren’t always the people we see getting the glory—politicians and athletes and movie stars.  They’re the commoners around us.  And it’s their stories I like to tell.
In "The Outcast" from THE WINTER STONE, hero Lachlan Mar isn’t a clan laird with a castle.  He's a common soldier who's made an enormous sacrifice for his country and his king, and he proves to Alisoune Hay, a brilliant lass who makes spectacles for a living, that even a broken warrior and a simple man can become the noble champion of her heart.

About the Author:

When she's not writing swashbuckling historical romances and playing medieval matchmaker, bestselling author Glynnis Campbell (previously writing as Sarah McKerrigan and Kira Morgan) is a cartoon voice, the wife of a rock star, and the mother of two young adults. She's been a ballerina, a typographer, a film composer, a piano player, a singer in an all-girl rock band, and a voice in those violent video games you won't let your kids play. She does her best writing on cruise ships, in Scottish castles, on her husband's tour bus, and at home in her sunny southern California garden. Glynnis loves transporting readers to a place where the bold heroes have endearing flaws, the women are stronger than they look, the land is lush and untamed, and chivalry is far from dead!

  5. Thank you for recognizing that every girl is not a princess and every lad not a prince. Thank you for shining the literary light on the common person. :)
