The Promise
by Apryl Baker

Armed with kick-ass shoes, can CJ stop a maniacal coven leader, save the town, and still get Mr. Melt In Your Mouth Gorgeous while surviving the darkness coming for her?

The smoke from the fire burned her eyes, its heat caressed her skin and the taste of fear choked her. She was going to burn just as her ancestor did all those centuries ago in New Salem Village. How could she have been so wrong about everything?

Cassie Jayne Bishop grew up the only non-believer in town of Coven. When a stranger comes to the sleepy town of New Salem, everything she thought was true unraveled around her. Ethan made her question everything, even her sister’s death. Clues start to pile up and Cassie is determined to find out if the Coven was the real reason her sister died.

What she uncovers terrifies her to the very depths of her soul....

The Promise is a mystery at heart, but it has a romance that will make your toes curl and your heart melt.

About the Author:
So who am I? Well, I'm the crazy girl with an imagination that never shuts up. I LOVE scary movies. My friend Chazz laughs at me when I scare myself watching them and tells me to stop watching them, but who doesn't love to get scared? I grew up in a small town nestled in the southern mountains of West Virginia where I spent days roaming around in the woods, climbing trees, and causing general mayhem. Nights I would stay up reading Nancy Drew by flashlight under the covers until my parents yelled at me to go to sleep.

Growing up in a small town, I learned a lot of values and morals, I also learned parents have spies everywhere and there's always someone to tell your mama on you. So when you get grounded, what is there left to do? Read! My Aunt Jo gave me my first real romance novel. It was a romance titled "Lord Margrave's Deception." I remember it fondly. But I also learned I had a deep and abiding love of mysteries and anything paranormal. As I grew up, I started to write just that and would entertain my friends with stories featuring them as main characters.

Now, I live Huntersville, NC where I entertain my family and watch the cats get teased by the birds and laugh myself silly when they swoop down and then dive back up just out of reach. The cats start yelling something fierce...lol.

I love books, I love writing books, and I love entertaining people with my silly stories.

The Road to Publishing Can Be…Interesting

When I first got serious about writing, I did what probably every other writer does. I sent out what seemed like a million query letters and got back a whole stack of rejection letters. No, I was not one of those lucky instant successes.

What was frustrating about the experience was that the people reading my books (and no, it wasn’t just family members being nice) all seemed to enjoy the books and find them quite engaging and interesting, but despite that, not a single publisher or literary agent wanted to take a chance on me.

Eventually, I got tired of trying the traditional route and decided to self-publish. I was unsure how it would go at first, so I started out with a standalone book, Escaping Fate. I took a while to get all the different formatting techniques figured out and decide where to list the book, but eventually I got the book on all the major ebook websites. I actually had a lot of fun doing it. Marketing was a bit trickier. I had little extra money to spend on marketing, and I had just decided to go back to school for a career change, so I largely had to rely on word of mouth…which took a while. It was about one year and three books later (Twin Souls Saga) that I really started selling books at a decent rate.

At this point, I felt comfortable with the idea of continuing to self-publish. It wasn’t until a friend of mine recommended her publisher to me that I started considering a traditional publisher again. I was elated when the wanted to sign me for a three book deal. Unfortunately, that relationship did not end well and I again returned to self-publishing for my next series, The Destroyer Trilogy.

After the terrible experience I had with my publisher, I was dead set on staying with self-publishing for the rest of my books. It was only by chance that I ended up reconsidering.
For those of you who blog, you’re probably familiar with the fun blogger awards that circulate around the blogosphere. My blog was nominated for one, and along with accepting the award I had to answer questions about the book I was currently writing. This book was originally titled Godling Hunger, the first book in The Godling Chronicles.

I didn’t realize at the time that there was already a series by that name, written by the talented Brian Anderson. When his publisher, Kitty Bullard from GMTA Publishing contacted me about the duplicate name I had no idea that it would lead to me sending her my manuscript, signing a contract, and finally finding a fantastic small press publisher to work with. My novel was renamed Wicked Hunger, book one of the SomeOne Wicked This Way Comes series, and working with GMTA has been a great experience. I’m excited to have my new book published with GMTA under their Mythos Press imprint.

SYNOPSIS

Vanessa and Zander Roth are good at lying. They have to be when they are hiding a deadly secret. Day after day, they struggle to rein in their uncontrollable hunger for pain and suffering in order to live normal lives. Things only get worse when Ivy Guerra appears with her pink-striped hair and secrets. The vicious hunger Ivy inspires is frightening, not to mention suspicious.

Vanessa’s instincts are rarely wrong, so when they tell her that Ivy’s appearance is a sign of bad things to come, she listens. She becomes determined to expose Ivy’s secrets. Vanessa tries to warn her brother, but Zander is too enamored with Ivy to pay attention to her conspiracy theories.

One of them is right about Ivy … but if they lose control of their hunger, it won’t matter who is right and who is wrong. One little slip, and they’ll all be dead.

“The Guardians” coming August 2013…
Book #1 in the Lost Realm Series
Synopsis:

When sixteen-year-old twins Emma and Evin LeFay are suddenly forced to pack their belongings after the tragic murder of their mother, they soon find that the busy city life of Boston, Massachusetts is more than they could have expected.

First are the two mysterious boys that Emma crosses paths with one night, after being caught in the wrong place at the wrong time. She thought she escaped them without getting caught, but it soon becomes apparent to her and Evin after a series of strange events that someone—or rather, several people—seem to be following them.

It’s after a close-run in with a group of menacing creatures, and the sudden aid of the same strange people that have been following them that Emma and Evin quickly realize there is more to Boston than skyscrapers and noisy cars.

Left with no other options and seeking the truth behind their mother’s murder, Emma and Evin accompany their saviors to a place known as Hawthorne Academy. It’s here that the twins soon learn they are part of a supernatural race with rare abilities, known as Dracons, one Otherworld race amongst four other paranormal races that have lived in disguise as humans for centuries.

Being part of an Otherworld race has its drawbacks, however, when Emma and Evin are enrolled for training at Hawthorne after a heated meeting with the Otherworld Council and its leaders. It’s either sink or swim for these Otherworldly twins as they train at the academy and learn to control their unique gifts.

Convinced life couldn't get much more bizarre, Emma and Evin discover a mysterious archway leading to an entirely different realm that has been lost over time. It's in this Lost Realm and the Celestial kingdom of Evmurah that the twins are dubbed the Guardians of the Realms, protectors of both the Mortal and Immortal Realms.

It's Emma and Evin’s job to protect both realms from the darkness that taints them and the mysterious Precursor that seems to want them dead.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

K.L. Penington was born and raised in Shreveport, Louisiana, which is what initially inspired the background for Emma and Evin. It was at an early age that K.L. discovered she was not whatsoever athletically gifted, an evil genius, or the next Beethoven. One thing she did know, however, was that she loved to read. As a result, growing up, some of her best friends and biggest influences in her life were the characters from her favorite books.

The passion behind K.L.’s writing comes from the ability to be anyone and do anything, and because she can share the multiple different personalities living in her head without anyone judging her—much. Her dream has always been to one day see own books on bookshelves, next to the hundreds of other books she enjoys reading.

Currently residing in Wichita Falls, Texas, K.L. attends Midwestern State University, where she is in fierce pursuit of English degree. When not writing, K.L. can be found haunting the local coffee shop, nurturing an everlasting addiction to chai tea, or spoiling her only child, Lily, the small poodle with the big attitude.
